How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: A Step-by-Step Guide

In the event of a fire, knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can be the difference between a small incident and a major emergency. Whether you're at home, work, or elsewhere, being prepared and acting swiftly is crucial.

This guide will walk you through the basic steps to effectively and safely use a fire extinguisher. You'll also learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher for various situations.

The PASS Method: Four Simple Steps

The most common method for how to correctly use a fire extinguisher is known as PASS, which stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

Pull the pin first, remove the safety pin from the fire extinguisher. This action will break the tamper seal, making the extinguisher ready for use. The pin is usually located near the top of the extinguisher and is easy to pull out with a firm grip.

Aim at the base once the pin is removed, point the nozzle at the base of the fire. It’s important to aim low because aiming at the flames will not be as effective. The fire needs to be attacked at its source to be extinguished.

Squeeze the handle with the nozzle aimed correctly, squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. Maintain control of the extinguisher and ensure you’re using consistent pressure.

Sweep side to side sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire. Continue this motion until the fire is completely out. Even if the flames seem to be under control, it’s crucial to stay vigilant in case the fire reignites.

Key Tips to Remember

  • Know your surroundings: Before you use a fire extinguisher, ensure you have a clear exit route in case the fire grows out of control.
  • Your safety comes first: If the fire is too large or is spreading quickly, evacuate the area and call emergency services.
  • Regular maintenance: Fire extinguishers should be checked regularly to ensure they’re in good working order. Most extinguishers come with a gauge to check if they are still pressurised and ready for use.
  • Training is important: While this guide provides the basics, taking a fire safety course can give you hands-on experience and help you stay calm in an emergency.

After Using a Fire Extinguisher

Once the fire is out, it’s crucial to monitor the area to ensure the fire doesn’t reignite. If you're in a commercial setting, notify the appropriate personnel so that a replacement fire extinguisher can be ordered, and the area can be assessed for safety. Always report any fire incident to the authorities, even if it seems minor, to ensure proper investigation and safety checks are carried out.

When Not to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Fire extinguishers are designed for small, contained fires. If the fire has spread beyond a single area or is too intense, it’s safer to evacuate and let the professionals handle it. Additionally, if the fire is producing large amounts of smoke, it’s better to evacuate immediately, as inhaling smoke can be dangerous.
