What is a Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher?
A wet chemical fire extinguisher is a type of fire extinguisher that uses a special solution to extinguish fires caused by cooking oils and fats. These types of fires are classified as Class F fires and are common in commercial kitchens, restaurants, and catering establishments. The wet chemical solution works by creating a barrier on the surface of the burning oil or fat, cooling it and preventing re-ignition.
How Do Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers Work?
Wet chemical fire extinguishers contain a solution of potassium salts. When sprayed onto a fire, the solution reacts with the burning oil or fat to form a soapy layer (saponification). This layer effectively smothers the flames and cools the burning material, stopping the fire in its tracks. The extinguisher is equipped with a long lance, allowing the user to apply the solution from a safe distance, minimising the risk of injury.
